Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran will travel to New Delhi on Sunday to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The visit occurs amid renewed political discussions over alliances in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Recent developments within the AIADMK have shaped the context for this visit. During its General Council meeting, the party approved a resolution granting general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) the authority to finalise future alliance decisions.
This resolution strengthens leadership control within the AIADMK and signals strategic positioning before the upcoming polls.
Shortly after the decision, Nagenthran met Palaniswami at his Chennai residence, fuelling speculation about renewed coordination between the BJP and the AIADMK. Following this engagement, he departed for New Delhi to continue discussions at the national level.
Earlier, Nagenthran had told the media that his visit included attending a function marking the release of a commemorative postal stamp honouring historic Tamil ruler Perumbidugu Mutharaiyar. However, the political significance grew after he also met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
In a post on X, Nagenthran described the meeting with Sitharaman as a ‘pilgrimage visit’ and noted submitting petitions and representations collected during his recent outreach programmes across Tamil Nadu. While officials did not share specific details, analysts view these talks as part of broader consultations with the BJP central leadership.
AIADMK-BJP Alliance Talks Gain Momentum
Sources suggest that Nagenthran is expected to meet HM Amit Shah later in the day, a development closely monitored in political circles. The BJP-AIADMK alliance has experienced cycles of cooperation and tension over the years.
While the parties contested jointly in the 2021 Assembly elections and 2024 Lok Sabha polls, disagreements on leadership, seat-sharing, and regional strategies have occasionally surfaced.
The AIADMK allowed Palaniswami to independently decide alliances to consolidate authority and negotiate from a position of strength. Meanwhile, the BJP views maintaining functional relations with the AIADMK as strategically vital for expanding its footprint in Tamil Nadu.
Nagenthran’s consecutive engagements — first in Chennai with Palaniswami and then with senior Union ministers in Delhi — are seen as a significant step.
Political observers believe these consultations could provide early signals about the future trajectory of the alliance as the 2026 Assembly elections approach.
