December 19, 1961: End of Colonial Rule
December 19, 1961, marks the day when Goa was finally liberated from Portuguese control, bringing an end to 451 years of colonial rule.
Unlike the rest of India, which gained independence from the British in 1947, Portugal refused to relinquish control, claiming Goa was culturally and religiously distinct.
To end colonial rule, the Indian government launched Operation Vijay under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, a coordinated military operation spanning land, sea, and air, which lasted over 36 hours.
Several leaders and citizens contributed to the liberation struggle through protests and movements against Portuguese rule.
TB Cunha, revered as the ‘Father of Goan Nationalism’, initiated the first organised campaign for Goa’s freedom. Returning from France during Mahatma Gandhi’s mass movements, Cunha dedicated himself to the cause, inspiring generations of Goans.
Goa Liberation Day continues to serve as a reminder of the courage, determination, and sacrifice that ensured the state’s integration into the Indian Union, celebrated with respect and pride by citizens and leaders alike.
