President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday visited the historic Sevagram Ashram, exploring key sites associated with Mahatma Gandhi, including Bapu Kuti, Ba Kuti, and Adi Niwas. She paid tributes to Gandhi, toured the premises, and showed keen interest in the historical significance of the locations.
The President also participated in a prayer meeting, planted a sapling, and engaged in traditional thread spinning. She was accompanied by Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, State Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Guardian Minister Dr Pankaj Bhoyar, and Collector Vanmathi C.
Residents of the Ashram noted President Murmu’s simplicity and attention to detail.
While examining artefacts, she noticed a pair of large tongs and asked about their purpose. Officials explained that during Gandhi’s time, snakes were not harmed; instead, they were safely captured and released, reflecting the principle of non-violence.
The President expressed appreciation for this anecdote. She also took time to read information boards and plaques across the Ashram, unlike many visitors who often rush through their visits.
In keeping with tradition, President Murmu removed her shoes before entering huts and wore bamboo slippers provided at the site. She also showed interest in the “hotline phone” once used by Gandhi.
As part of the visit, the programme included a tree plantation ceremony. The President quickly identified the sapling as a Bel tree, remarking on its usefulness, which impressed those present.
President Murmu also appreciated the Ashram’s peaceful and clean environment and tried spinning thread on the charkha.
Before departing, she praised the upkeep of the premises, stating, “You have maintained this area beautifully; continue to preserve it.”
The President also expressed admiration for the preserved clay roof tiles on the huts. Her visit left a strong impression on Ashram residents, who highlighted her thoughtful engagement and humility throughout the tour.
