As Prayagraj gears up for the Maha Kumbh 2025, the historic Omkar Adi Ganesh Temple in Daraganj is undergoing a transformation.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, extensive beautification work is being carried out to enhance the temple’s spiritual and architectural splendor.
Steeped in ancient lore, the temple holds a unique position in the Sanatan tradition.
According to mythology, Lord Ganesh first manifested in idol form here on the banks of the Ganga, earning the title ‘Adi Ganesh’ or the ‘First Ganesh’.
Lord Brahma performed the first yagya of creation at this site, embedding it with profound historical and spiritual significance.
The temple priest, Sudhanshu Agarwal, recounts that the Omkar Adi Ganesh embodies the unified essence of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh.
He stated, “According to scriptures, Brahma Ji worshipped Adi Ganesh before commencing the ten Ashvamedha Yagyas at Dashashwamedh Ghat.”
Historical records highlight the temple’s restoration in 1585 AD by Raja Todarmal, one of Emperor Akbar’s Navratnas.
This renovation not only reinstated the temple’s prominence but also ensured its preservation as a vital cultural and spiritual landmark.
Sudhanshu Agarwal further shared that the Shiv Mahapuran notes Adi Ganesh as the remover of obstacles (Vighnaharta) and the benevolent giver (Vinayak).
His worship is particularly significant during the Chaturthi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Magh.
Devotees believe that offering prayers here ensures the smooth completion of tasks and fulfillment of wishes.
As the Maha Kumbh approaches, officials rejuvenate the temple with fresh paint, intricate decorations, and infrastructural upgrades.
Devotees and visitors alike will witness a restored Shri Adi Ganesh Temple that resonates with the spiritual magnificence of this once-in-12-years event.
