Union Home Minister Amit Shah will pay homage to police martyrs at the National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, on Wednesday, October 21, as the country observes Police Commemoration Day.
The Minister will address the gathering and lay a wreath at the memorial’s altar dedicated to the martyrs of Hot Springs, according to an official statement.
Shah will flag off a motorcycle rally featuring around 90 police riders from various states and Union Territories, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Central Police Organisations.
The participants will represent Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, alongside forces including the CRPF, CISF, BSF, SSB, ITBP and NSG.
The rally forms part of the nationwide ‘Fight Against Drugs’ campaign, which will bring together police riders from all states, Union Territories and central forces at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat. They will participate in the Ekta Parade on October 31.
Police Commemoration Day observances will take place across the country to honour personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty.
The main ceremony at the National Police Memorial will, however, feature a joint parade by the CAPFs and Delhi Police.
From October 22 to 30, the CAPFs and Central Police Organisations will organise commemorative activities at the memorial.
The events will further include visits by martyrs’ families, police band performances, motorcycle rallies, the Run for Martyrs, blood donation camps and children’s competitions.
Video screenings will highlight police personnel’s courage and sacrifices.
Police Commemoration Day marks the October 21, 1959, ambush at Hot Springs, Ladakh, in which 10 policemen were killed by Chinese troops.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the National Police Memorial in New Delhi to the nation in 2018.
