Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in consecutive terms, surpassing the record previously held by Jawaharlal Nehru.
Officials from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the Union Cabinet marked the milestone by extending congratulations and adopting a resolution.
In a post on X, the PMO said its officers congratulated PM Modi on achieving the distinction, noting that over the past 12 years, he has provided leadership marked by stability, transparency, good governance, inclusive development and national progress.

Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Dr PK Mishra and Principal Secretary-2 Shaktikanta Das welcomed the Prime Minister on the occasion.
PM Modi crossed Nehru’s record of 4,399 days in office as an elected Prime Minister.
Nehru’s tenure from 1952 onwards is considered for the comparison, as he headed the interim government between 1947 and 1952 before India’s first general elections.
While former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served for more than 14 years in office, her tenure was not continuous.
PM Modi has held office uninterruptedly since first taking oath in 2014, followed by successive mandates in 2019 and a third consecutive term in 2024.
Earlier in the day, the Union Cabinet adopted a resolution congratulating the Prime Minister on the achievement. Cabinet members honoured him with a standing ovation.
The resolution described the milestone as a reflection of India’s democratic consciousness, public trust and public participation. It also highlighted that PM Modi is approaching 25 years of continuous service as Head of Government and noted that the National Democratic Alliance secured a third consecutive mandate after six decades.
Major Projects Under PM Modi
The Modi government’s tenure has also witnessed several major infrastructure and nation-building projects, including the new Parliament building, Central Vista redevelopment, Kartavya Path, Vande Bharat trains, the Statue of Unity, INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link, Noida International Airport, Namo Bharat RRTS and the Ganga Expressway.
