Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi shared a rare and cordial interaction in the Parliament complex on Saturday, marking a departure from their otherwise tense exchanges during House proceedings.
The brief meeting took place during an event commemorating the 200th birth anniversary of social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule.
A video of the interaction, which quickly went viral, showed the two leaders engaging in a candid conversation.
According to those present, the interaction lasted around five minutes. It appeared amicable despite the strained political climate during the ongoing Budget Session.
One witness described it as a genuine gesture. The witness noted that both leaders greeted each other respectfully and engaged in a short discussion.
Another source said the Prime Minister enquired about Sonia Gandhi’s health. She recently required hospitalisation following complaints of vomiting and nausea.
Rahul Gandhi reportedly responded that her condition is improving, with the Prime Minister expressing satisfaction and conveying his best wishes.
Sonia Gandhi had been admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on March 24 and was discharged seven days later after recovering from a systemic infection.
The interaction comes amid heightened political tensions, with the Budget Session witnessing repeated disruptions and adjournments in the Lok Sabha.
Just last month, tensions escalated when PM Modi skipped a key session after Rahul Gandhi allegedly ignored multiple rulings from the Speaker.
Rahul Gandhi has remained in focus for his aggressive speeches and controversial remarks. He referred to Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu as a ‘traitor’, a comment that drew criticism from the Prime Minister. He has also led protests at Parliament’s Makar Dwar, drawing criticism from treasury benches.
Several senior leaders, including Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Union Ministers JP Nadda and Arjun Ram Meghwal, were present during Saturday’s interaction.
