PM Modi’s Independence Day Speeches Highlight Consistent Theme Of Self-Reliance

On August 15, PM Narendra Modi urged Indians to produce goods that can compete globally without harming the environment. His pitch aligns with the larger theme of self-reliance that has run through his Independence Day addresses since 2014.

In his debut speech, PM Modi challenged the youth to reflect on why India still imports even the smallest items despite its potential. He stressed that all Made-in-India goods must meet two standards, ‘zero defect and zero effect’.

In 2014, PM Modi identified himself as an ‘outsider in Delhi’ and unveiled flagship initiatives such as Jan Dhan Yojana, Make in India, Skill India, Digital India, Swachh Bharat, and the replacement of the Planning Commission. These reforms set the foundation for his legacy.

By 2016, he highlighted achievements such as large-scale toilet construction and financial inclusion for the poor.

In 2017, his speech centred on the idea of building a ‘New India’, secure, prosperous, and strong.

Atmanirbhar Bharat and Vocal for Local

PM Modi consistently emphasised the need for self-reliance, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic. He announced the government’s focus on Atmanirbhar Bharat, encouraging reduced dependence on imports and greater support for Vocal for Local initiatives.

In his latest address, he urged the nation to embrace the ‘daam kam, dum jyada’ mantra — manufacturing goods that are affordable yet powerful in quality.

Since 2020, PM Modi’s speeches have reflected a global vision for India. His 2020 address emphasised ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ as a strategy to integrate with global supply chains.

The following year, he laid out a roadmap for Viksit Bharat by 2047, focusing on long-term nation-building.

Panch Pran and Roadmap for a Strong Nation

In 2022, marking 75 years of Independence, PM Modi introduced the Panch Pran (five vows), urging citizens to commit to unity, development, and the removal of colonial mindsets.

His 2024 speech carried a strong reformist thrust, addressing governance reforms that directly impacted the middle class, farmers, and the poor. He also pitched for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and One Nation, One Election (ONOE).
