PM Modi at Coochbehar
In a fervent speech during his election campaign in Coochbehar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi targeted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, criticizing her government’s handling of the Sandeshkhali incident. Modi accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of protecting the culprits involved and emphasized the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) commitment to ensuring justice for the victims. He asserted that only the BJP can address the injustices faced by women in Bengal and urged for the strengthening of the party’s presence in the state.

However, Modi’s tone shifted as he expressed gratitude towards Mamata Banerjee and the West Bengal government during the rally. He recalled a previous instance where the ground for his rally was obstructed by a platform built by Mamata Banerjee, but this time, he acknowledged the absence of such obstacles and thanked her for it.
The BJP has been making significant electoral gains in North Bengal since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The upcoming polls in Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, and Jalpaiguri on April 19 mark the beginning of the seven-phase electoral process in West Bengal.

Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court made scathing remarks regarding the Sandeshkhali incident, stating that even if only 1% of the allegations were true, it would be utterly shameful. The court held the district administration and ruling party morally accountable for the incident, highlighting contradictions in the claims of Bengal being safe for women. The scrutiny from the judiciary underscores the seriousness of the issue and demands accountability from the state authorities.
