Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the 115th episode of his radio show *Mann Ki Baat* on Sunday, highlighted the rising issue of “digital arrest” scams, calling it a serious fraudulent activity. He urged citizens to stay alert, describing those involved in such crimes as “enemies of society.”
“There is no such thing as digital arrest in the law. This is just fraud, deceit, lies—a gang of criminals, and those who engage in it are enemies of society,” the Prime Minister stated.
To tackle these scams, he informed listeners that investigative agencies are working closely with state governments. Modi added that the recently established National Cyber Coordination Centre aims to enhance coordination among agencies, bolstering efforts against cybercrime.
Modus Operandi of “Digital Arrest” Scams
In his address, PM Modi explained how fraudsters work. He revealed that these criminals first gather detailed personal information about their targets. “They collect so much information about you that it surprises you,” he said, adding that they then create a fearful atmosphere using uniforms, legal jargon, and fake government setups.
The scammers employ high-pressure tactics, urging immediate responses. “You have to decide now, or you will be arrested,” they say, pressuring victims to act without thinking. Victims across all age groups and backgrounds have lost significant money to these tactics, Modi warned.
Three Steps to Digital Safety: Stop, Think, Act
PM Modi outlined three steps for digital security—“Stop, Think, Take Action.” He advised citizens to remain calm when receiving suspicious calls, avoid hasty actions, and protect personal information. He also encouraged using the national cyber helpline (1930) and the website cybercrime.gov.in to report scams.
Modi stated that thousands of fraudulent video-calling IDs, SIM cards, mobile phones, and bank accounts have been blocked by authorities. He urged citizens to spread awareness using the hashtag #SafeDigitalIndia and called for schools and colleges to involve students in campaigns against cyber scams.
“Together, we can combat this challenge,” the Prime Minister concluded, emphasizing collective action in society to safeguard against digital fraud.
