At least nine people were injured in a stampede early Sunday at Bandra railway station in Mumbai as a crowd of passengers rushed to board a train bound for Uttar Pradesh. Seven passengers sustained minor injuries, while two were critically injured.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the incident occurred on platform number 1 as people gathered to board the Bandra-Gorakhpur Express (train number 22921). The heavy rush ahead of Diwali led to the stampede as passengers tried to board the train at Bandra Terminus station.
Railway Police and fellow passengers quickly moved the injured to safety, using stretchers to transport them to nearby Bhabha Hospital. Videos from the scene captured a railway officer carrying an injured passenger on his shoulder and several passengers lying injured on the platform floor.
The BMC confirmed that the situation at the station has stabilized, and all injured passengers have received medical care. Bhabha Hospital reported that nine people were admitted, identified as Shabhir Abdul Rehman, Parmeshwar Sukhdar Gupta, Ravindra Harihar Chuma, Ramsevak Ravindra Prasad Prajapati, Sanjay Tilakram Kangay, Divyanshu Yogendra Yadav, Mohammad Shareef Shaikh, Indrajith Sahani, and Noor Mohammad Shaikh, with Sahani and Shaikh in critical condition.
An Indian Railways ACP stated that ten people were initially reported injured, with two already discharged. The ACP attributed the stampede to the train’s rescheduling, which intensified the rush on the platform.
The Railway PRO added that passengers attempted to board the moving train, which consisted solely of general bogies without any reserved compartments. The large crowd surged as the train arrived, leading to the stampede.
