In a major step towards modernising railway infrastructure in the Northeast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday virtually inaugurated the redeveloped Haibargaon Railway Station in Assam’s Nagaon district.
Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya attended the ceremony on-site, marking a proud moment for the region under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS).
Haibargaon holds the distinction of being the first railway station in Assam to be inaugurated under ABSS, among 50 stations selected in the state.
Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹15.85 crore, the redeveloped station exemplifies the government’s commitment to infrastructure development with a focus on passenger comfort, cultural integration, and regional connectivity.
The redevelopment is part of a broader nationwide initiative that saw 103 railway stations inaugurated across 18 states and Union Territories on the same day.
Haibargaon’s inclusion signifies the government’s emphasis on bridging regional disparities and fostering inclusive growth, especially in the Northeast.
The upgraded Haibargaon station features enhanced amenities, improved accessibility, and architectural elements that reflect local culture.

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya highlighted the significance of the project, stating that the inauguration is not just about infrastructure but also about bringing the people of Assam closer to national progress.
“This is a proud moment for the people of Assam and the entire Northeast. The station now represents not just connectivity but a gateway to opportunities,” he said.
PM Modi’s Vision For The Northeast
Prime Minister Modi, speaking virtually during the nationwide event, reaffirmed his commitment to transforming grassroots infrastructure and connecting even the remotest parts of India through modern rail networks.
The inauguration of Haibargaon station underlines his government’s broader mission of regional development and improved mobility across all corners of the country.
The Haibargaon redevelopment stands as a symbol of progress and modernisation, leading Assam’s participation in one of the Indian Railways’ most ambitious initiatives.
As more stations undergo redevelopment, this transformation will consequently strengthen economic growth, boost local employment, and enhance tourism in the region.
With this redevelopment, Haibargaon is no longer just a stop on the railway map, it is a testament to progress, pride, and the promise of a better-connected future for Assam and the Northeast.
