In a pointed attack, PM Modi drew attention to the conspicuous absence of prominent Congress leaders such as Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari, who had played significant roles in India’s global outreach following Operation Sindoor.
Without naming them directly, he criticised the Congress high command for sidelining leaders who had shown country-first stances.
“Some aren’t allowed to speak in Parliament, some object even if you praise India,” PM Modi remarked, a clear reference to Tharoor’s recent public appreciation of the government’s handling of the situation, which reportedly caused internal unease within the party.
Tharoor’s Silence & Tewari’s Subtle Message
While the BJP-led Centre had no hesitation in utilising Tharoor for international outreach missions, including engagements with the US, the Congress opted to keep him out of its official delegation.
The move intensified speculation about deepening divides within the party.
Shashi Tharoor, once considered the Congress’s global face, maintained a studied silence during the debate, fuelling questions about his political positioning.
Manish Tewari, also sidelined, chose poetic ambiguity on social media, posting the line: “Hai preet jahaan ki reet sada, main geet wahaan ke gaata hoon.” When pressed for clarity, he responded, “If you don’t understand my silence, you will never understand my words.”
Far from being on the defensive, PM Modi flipped the debate, using the Congress’s internal contradictions to his advantage.
By spotlighting the sidelining of respected voices within the Opposition, he framed the party as unable to stand behind leaders who speak in India’s interest.
His remarks turned the spotlight from the government’s actions to the Congress’s internal struggles, effectively converting the debate into a narrative win for the ruling side.
The debate, intended to challenge the government on Operation Sindoor, instead underscored the Congress’s organisational tensions.
PM Modi’s ability to combine historical critique with present-day political observation shifted the momentum in favour of the BJP, making the session a defining moment in the ongoing tussle between the two parties.
