Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to travel to Gangtok on Thursday to participate in the ‘Sikkim@50: Where Progress Meets Purpose and Nature Nurtures Growth’ programme, commemorating 50 years of Sikkim’s statehood.
However, due to inclement weather, he will not be able to attend the celebrations in person.
Instead, PM Modi will address the people of Sikkim virtually from Bagdogra in West Bengal.
His address will coincide with the launch of several key infrastructure and development projects, reinforcing the government’s commitment to Sikkim’s progress.
The Prime Minister will launch a new 500-bed district hospital in Namchi, valued at over ₹750 crore.
The project will significantly improve healthcare access in the region.
He will also inaugurate a passenger ropeway at Sangachoeling in Pelling, Gyalshing district, enhancing tourism and easing transportation in the hill state.
In addition, PM Modi will unveil a statue of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the Atal Amrit Udyan in Gangtok district.
As part of the commemorative activities, he will release a special coin, a souvenir coin, and a postal stamp to mark Sikkim’s golden jubilee.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Modi will also visit West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh on 29 and 30 May.
During this visit, the Prime Minister will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of various development projects totalling over ₹70,000 crore.
Among them is the City Gas Distribution (CGD) project for Alipurduar and Cooch Behar in West Bengal.
With an investment of ₹1,010 crore, this project will provide Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to more than 2.5 lakh households and over 100 commercial and industrial units, and will establish around 19 CNG stations.
In a post on social media, PM Modi wrote, “Over the next two days, I will be attending programmes in Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. The development works that will commence will bring innumerable benefits for people and strengthen our resolve to build a Viksit Bharat.”
While weather disrupted his physical presence in Sikkim, the Prime Minister’s virtual address and project launches symbolise continuity in progress and development across the region.
