Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Gujarat on March 31 to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for several development initiatives. A key highlight includes the launch of a major drinking water project in the Banaskantha district.
The Prime Minister will dedicate Part I and Part II of the Ambaji drinking water scheme, developed for Rs 141 crore.
The project will serve nearly 78,000 residents across 34 villages and Ambaji town, a significant pilgrimage centre.
The scheme covers areas within Danta and Amirgadh talukas, where difficult terrain has historically limited access to dependable drinking water.
Residents in these regions have largely depended on groundwater sources.
Officials stated that the project introduces a shift from groundwater reliance to a surface water-based distribution system. This transition is expected to enhance water availability and improve public health outcomes.
Authorities have designed the infrastructure to meet future requirements, considering the increasing number of pilgrims visiting the Ambaji Temple.
The system will accommodate both current consumption and projected demand growth.
The initiative aligns with Gujarat’s broader water management strategy under the Statewide Water Supply Grid.
The state has already installed more than 3,300 kilometres of bulk pipelines. This network supplies surface water to over 15,000 villages and 251 urban centres, benefiting more than five crore people.
Officials highlighted that Gujarat has reduced groundwater dependency through sustained use of rivers, canals, and reservoirs.
Additional progress is anticipated under Phase II of the Jal Jeevan Mission, which aims to expand rural water access further.
A 24-hour rural helpline has also been established to address water-related grievances efficiently.
