Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) on Thursday at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan in New Delhi.
The Parliament House Complex will host the high-level event.
The conference marks a key moment in India’s parliamentary diplomacy.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the Prime Minister will also address the international gathering.
Through this address, he will reaffirm India’s commitment to democratic values and institutional cooperation across the Commonwealth.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will chair the conference.
The event is expected to bring together 61 Speakers and Presiding Officers from 42 Commonwealth countries.
Representatives from four semi-autonomous legislatures will participate, highlighting the forum’s wide and diverse representation.
As a result, the presence of senior parliamentary leaders from multiple continents strengthens India’s position as a global hub for democratic dialogue and legislative cooperation.
As outlined by the PMO, the conference will take up several contemporary parliamentary challenges.
Discussions will centre on the responsibility of Speakers and Presiding Officers in protecting democratic institutions.
At the same time, delegates will assess how rapid political, social and technological changes affect legislatures worldwide. They will also examine how emerging technologies are reshaping parliamentary procedures and public engagement.
This year’s CSPOC will place special emphasis on the use of artificial intelligence in parliamentary work. It will also explore the growing impact of social media on Members of Parliament. Furthermore, discussions will address both the opportunities and risks these digital tools create for transparency, accountability and democratic ethics.
In addition, participants will explore innovative methods to improve public understanding of parliamentary functioning.
They will also discuss ways to encourage citizen participation beyond voting, reflecting a shift towards more inclusive democratic practices.
The CSPOC remains one of the Commonwealth’s most respected parliamentary forums. It enables members to share best practices on legislative procedures, ethics and institutional integrity.
Overall, India’s hosting of the 28th edition reinforces its continued focus on strengthening democratic cooperation across Commonwealth nations.
