PM Modi To Unveil Revamped Gujarat Stations On May 22

As part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate 103 redeveloped railway stations across India on May 22, officials said on Tuesday.

Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, confirmed that Haibargaon Railway Station in Assam’s Nagaon district is among those to be inaugurated.

Haibargaon, once a crucial node during British rule due to Nagaon’s prominence in tea production and modern education, now stands as a modernised station. Originally built in 1887, the station has undergone a complete transformation. It now features striking architecture and state-of-the-art facilities.

On Tuesday, senior NFR officials inspected the upgraded site, showcasing enhanced passenger amenities. Consequently, the public reaction was overwhelmingly positive, Sharma noted.

Elderly locals recalled steam engines and the station’s modest past, expressing amazement at its modern facilities. Travellers like Shahil Kumar Rai from Guwahati, visiting the nearby Mahamrityunjay Temple, praised the grand entrance, spacious concourse, modern waiting halls, modular toilets, ramps, and accessible ticket counters.

Moreover, he said that although small, Haibargaon Railway Station now surpasses many others in infrastructure and passenger comfort.

Murals and sculptures reflecting Assamese culture adorn the station, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

Sharma said the redevelopment cost Rs 15.85 crore and has transformed the station into a modern, accessible hub. Handling about 1,200 passengers daily, Haibargaon now supports regional trade, urban mobility, and strengthens Nagaon’s role as a cultural and transport centre in Northeast India.

Furthermore, he added that redevelopment of 50 stations across Assam under ABSS is progressing swiftly. NFR remains committed to providing efficient, culturally rich, and modern railway infrastructure to the people of Assam.
