Manipur

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to unveil 31 development projects worth ₹8,500 crore in Manipur today, signalling a strong push towards recovery and progress in the violence-affected state. The projects include infrastructure investments and public initiatives aimed at restoring normalcy following ethnic clashes that began in May 2023.

During his two-day visit, PM Modi will meet with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Churachandpur district, who have been sheltering in relief camps due to ongoing tensions.

The Prime Minister will also address public gatherings in both Imphal and Churachandpur, underlining the government’s commitment to peace and rehabilitation.

In light of the prevailing security concerns, authorities have implemented extensive measures across Imphal West, Imphal East, Churachandpur, Bishnupur, and surrounding districts.

Lieutenant General Abhijit S Pendharkar conducted a comprehensive security review, including areas along the India-Myanmar border, ensuring the preparedness of forces in the region.

Prime Minister Modi will lay foundation stones for projects valued at ₹7,300 crore in Churachandpur’s Peace Ground and inaugurate initiatives worth ₹1,200 crore at the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal.

These projects span roadways, public facilities, and other essential infrastructure, all aimed at accelerating growth and enhancing connectivity.

Mixed Political Reactions

The Kuki-Zo Council, representing the tribal community, welcomed the Prime Minister’s visit, viewing it as an opportunity to foster unity and cultural pride.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders have termed the visit as a vital step towards ‘Viksit Bharat, Viksit Manipur’, urging public support.

Conversely, the Congress party criticised the visit as merely symbolic, calling for a clear roadmap to address peace, justice, and rehabilitation needs.

Manipur’s Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel emphasised that the Prime Minister’s visit is pivotal in restoring stability and fast-tracking development.

He reiterated Manipur’s strategic importance as part of India’s ‘Act East Policy’ and a gateway to Southeast Asia.

As the state cautiously steps towards recovery, the government hopes that these initiatives will lay the foundation for lasting peace and prosperity.
