PM Modi To Address UN Summit Of The Future, Skip High-Level Meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the UN Summit of the Future on September 23 but will not attend the annual high-level General Assembly meeting. The latest UN schedules confirm this change.

Initially, Modi was set to speak at the high-level meeting on September 26. However, he will now focus on the Summit of the Future, which runs from September 24 to 30. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar will represent India at the high-level meeting on September 28.

Modi will first attend the Quad Summit in Delaware, hosted by US President Joe Biden. Following this, he will participate in the “Modi and US, Progress Together” diaspora rally in Uniondale, New York, on September 23. The event has attracted over 25,000 ticket applications.

The Prime Minister will hold meetings with business and world leaders after the rally. His influential role in global diplomacy has led many leaders to seek discussions with him.

The Quad Summit, where PM Modi will join Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, will serve as a farewell for Biden and Kishida. The leaders will announce new joint patrols by their Coast Guards to monitor the Indo-Pacific region, where China has been assertive.

The Summit of the Future aims to address global challenges and opportunities. Leaders will discuss the Pact of the Future, including a Global Digital Compact to handle technology’s risks and benefits. Modi is scheduled to speak at the Summit’s morning session on September 23.  The time fall on around noon local time (9:30 p.m. in India).

Meanwhile, the high-level meeting will begin on September 24 with speeches by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Biden. EAM Jaishankar will take the stage on September 28 at about 4:30 p.m. (2 a.m. in India). Notably, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend either event. Instead, China’s Vice-President Han Zheng and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will represent their countries.
