Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold meetings with top leadership, address parliamentarians, and interact with business communities and the Indian diaspora during his upcoming visits to Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman next week, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday.
PM Modi will travel to Jordan from December 15–16 at the invitation of King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein. In Amman, he will hold bilateral talks with the Jordanian monarch, meet the Indian community, and participate in a business event.
MEA Secretary (South) Neena Malhotra noted that this will be ‘Prime Minister’s first full-fledged bilateral visit to Jordan,’ coinciding with the 75th year of diplomatic ties. She recalled that Modi had only transited through Jordan in 2018 but received “exceptional courtesies” from the King, making the stop “more than just a transit visit.”
She added that India and Jordan enjoy warm ties based on “mutual trust and goodwill,” spanning political, economic, defence and people-to-people cooperation. The two leaders last met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Italy in June 2024.
Malhotra noted that the leaders also spoke in April 2025 after the “ghastly Pahalgam terror attacks,” during which the King “condemned the terror attacks and said that terrorism should be rejected in all its forms and manifestations.”
Counter-Terrorism, Trade and Fertiliser Partnership In Focus
Jordan has consistently supported India on counter-terrorism issues, including cooperation through initiatives such as the Aqaba Process. Trade ties remain strong, with India being Jordan’s third-largest trading partner and bilateral trade valued at USD 2.8 billion.
Jordan is a key supplier of phosphates and potash to India, and both sides operate a major joint venture — the Jordan India Fertilizer Company (JIFCO) — with an investment of USD 860 million.
The country hosts more than 17,500 Indians working across manufacturing, construction, textiles and other sectors.
PM Narendra Modi and the Jordanian King are expected to address a joint business event, followed by Modi’s interaction with the Indian community. He will also visit the historic city of Petra with the Crown Prince.
PM Modi to Address Ethiopia’s Parliament During State Visit
The Prime Minister will then begin a State Visit to Ethiopia, where he will hold talks with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, address a parliament session and meet the Indian community.
Malhotra highlighted the long-standing development partnership in education, skilling and capacity building, with hundreds of Ethiopian students and professionals benefiting from ICCR and ITEC programmes. This will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ethiopia since 2011.
She described Ethiopia as “an important and trusted partner in the Global South,” noting that Abiy Ahmed has been a regular participant and speaker at the Voice of Global South Summits.
The visit will focus on strengthening cooperation in trade, connectivity, agriculture, manufacturing, mining, IT and infrastructure. India, she said, remains committed to supporting Africa’s development priorities under Agenda 2063.
Final Stop: Oman to Host PM Modi for High-Level Talks
PM Modi will conclude his tour in Oman, where he will hold discussions with Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. This will be Modi’s second visit to the country after 2018; the Sultan last visited India in December 2023.
Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary (CPV & OIA), said the Prime Minister will conduct a “comprehensive review of the entire spectrum of bilateral relations” and exchange views on regional and international issues. PM Modi is also expected to address a business forum and meet the Indian community.
MEA officials underlined that India’s partnership with Oman is rooted in centuries of trade and cultural linkages and has evolved into a robust strategic relationship across multiple sectors.
