On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a lion safari in Gujarat’s Gir National Park, marking World Wildlife Day.
Dressed in a safari outfit and carrying a camera, PM Modi captured glimpses of Gir’s Asiatic lions.
The Prime Minister also conveyed his greetings on World Wildlife Day, stating, “Today, on World Wildlife Day, let’s reiterate our commitment to protect and preserve the incredible biodiversity of our planet. Every species plays a vital role–let’s safeguard their future for generations to come! We also take pride in India’s contributions towards preserving and protecting wildlife.”
Asiatic lions inhabit around 30,000 square kilometers, covering 53 talukas across 9 districts of Gujarat.
The state government has introduced several initiatives to support their conservation and protect other wildlife.
Furthermore, the government is developing a National Referral Center for Wildlife over 20.24 hectares in New Pipalya, Junagadh district, as part of a national project.
A high-tech wildlife monitoring center and a state-of-the-art hospital in Sasan have further strengthened conservation efforts.
In 2024, the Gujarat government recruited 237 beat guards 162 men and 75 women—to patrol protected areas and safeguard lion habitats.
PM Modi has played a key role in the conservation of Asiatic lions and the overall development of the Gir region.
As Gujarat’s Chief Minister in 2007, he visited the Gir forest to assess ground realities and later introduced initiatives focused on conservation and biodiversity.
Under his leadership, the concept of Bruhad Gir was introduced, expanding conservation efforts beyond Gir National Park and Sanctuary to cover a 30,000 sq. km area from Barda to Botad.
This initiative also emphasized the welfare and progress of local communities alongside wildlife protection.
