Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at Opposition leaders in the Lok Sabha for questioning the timing of Operation Mahadev, an anti-terror mission that neutralised three Pakistani terrorists involved in the April Pahalgam attack.
Using sharp rhetoric during the Operation Sindoor debate, PM Modi accused the Opposition of undermining the nation’s security narrative and echoing Pakistan’s language.
A joint team of the Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police carried out Operation Mahadev in retaliation for the brutal massacre of 26 civilians in Pahalgam earlier this year.
The mission eliminated three members of The Resistance Front (TRF), a Pakistan-backed proxy outfit. While the operation was hailed as a success by the government, it sparked controversy after Opposition leaders questioned its timing.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav voiced scepticism, asking why the encounter occurred when it did, despite earlier cross-party support for action.
His remarks triggered heated exchanges in the House and drew a pointed response from the Prime Minister.
“For weeks, they demanded answers on the Pahalgam terrorists. Now that our forces have acted, they ask why now. What do they expect? Should we wait for Saawan ka Somwar to launch an operation named Mahadev?” PM Modi said, mocking the Opposition’s criticism.
The Prime Minister framed the remarks as evidence of misplaced priorities, stressing that security forces act on intelligence, not political calendars.
The treasury benches applauded his statement, amplifying the government’s narrative of decisive action.
PM Modi further accused Congress leaders of mirroring Islamabad’s rhetoric after some MPs demanded proof that the terrorists were indeed Pakistani nationals.
“The nation is shocked. Congress is saying, ‘Give us proof the terrorists were from Pakistan.’ That’s exactly what Pakistan is saying. Is Congress now speaking Pakistan’s language?” the Prime Minister asked.
By casting doubt on the attackers’ origins, PM Modi argued, the Opposition had inadvertently provided a ‘clean chit’ to Pakistan, weakening India’s position on cross-border terrorism.
The charge intensified the political clash, with the ruling party branding the Opposition’s stance as ‘irresponsible politicking in the face of terror’.
The BJP has consistently positioned itself as the guardian of national security, and Operation Mahadev has become a focal point in that narrative.
PM Modi’s remarks during the debate underscored the government’s commitment to proactive counter-terror measures while framing the Opposition as disconnected from the nation’s security concerns.
Operation Mahadev and the debate surrounding it have deepened the political divide on national security policy.
PM Modi’s sharp rebuttal not only defended the operation but also set the tone for the ruling party’s broader campaign narrative, emphasising decisive action against terror and questioning the Opposition’s credibility on issues of defence and sovereignty.
