PM Modi Reviews Northeast Flood Crisis; Offers Central Assistance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held telephonic conversations with the Chief Ministers of Assam and Sikkim, and the Governor of Manipur, to take stock of the worsening flood situation in India’s northeast.

The region has been reeling from incessant rainfall, leading to overflowing rivers, landslides, and large-scale displacement.

The Prime Minister expressed deep concern over the impact of the floods and reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to provide all necessary assistance in coordination with state authorities.

He assured that the Union Government is closely monitoring the situation and would offer full support for ongoing relief and rehabilitation measures.

Several northeastern states – including Assam, Sikkim, Manipur, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh- have witnessed intense rainfall over the past few days, causing rivers such as the Brahmaputra, Kushiyara, and Pachnoi to swell beyond danger marks.

Heavy rains have submerged lakhs of hectares of land, disrupting normal life, damaging infrastructure, and leaving thousands stranded.

In Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed via social media that he briefed the Prime Minister on the ground situation and the state’s efforts to manage the crisis.

“The Hon’ble PM expressed concern and assured full support from the Central Government for our relief and rehabilitation efforts,” Sarma stated on X (formerly Twitter).

Sikkim & Manipur In Crisis

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang also took to social media to thank the Prime Minister for his prompt outreach and commitment to help manage the landslides and flooding across the state.

He reassured citizens that the administration remains vigilant and is working relentlessly to reach all those in need.

In Manipur, where floodwaters have severely impacted parts of Imphal East and West, rescue operations led by the Army and Assam Rifles are in full swing.

Rescue teams have evacuated over 1,000 individuals so far, as floodwaters continue to rise.

A state bulletin on Monday reported that floods have affected more than 56,000 people across 174 villages.

The Centre, in coordination with local governments and armed forces, is overseeing relief operations that include setting up temporary shelters, distributing food and essential supplies, and conducting rescue efforts in submerged areas.

PM Modi’s direct intervention boosts the morale of state agencies managing the crisis.

With the monsoon season intensifying, the Prime Minister’s outreach signals a proactive stance from the Centre in managing natural calamities.

The government’s assurance of full cooperation is expected to speed up relief operations and ensure the safety and rehabilitation of affected communities.
