Rajiv Gandhi served as India’s Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989 after the assassination of his mother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
At the age of 40, Rajiv Gandhi became the youngest Prime Minister in the country’s history.
Born on August 20, 1944, in Bombay, Rajiv Gandhi was the grandson of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. His parents, Indira Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi, later moved to New Delhi after Feroze Gandhi became a Member of Parliament.
Rajiv Gandhi led the country until the 1989 general elections and later served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He resigned from the post in December 1990, months before he was assassinated in a terrorist attack in 1991.
Earlier in the day, the Congress party also paid tributes to the former Prime Minister and remembered his leadership and vision for the country.
The party said Rajiv Gandhi’s dedication to the nation and his ideas would continue to inspire generations.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several senior party leaders paid floral tributes at Vir Bhumi in Delhi.
The Congress party said Rajiv Gandhi’s contribution towards strengthening India’s unity, democratic values and technological progress remains an important part of the nation’s journey.
