PM Modi Pays Tribute To Quit India Movement Heroes On August Kranti Diwas

On 9 August, marking August Kranti Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured the courageous individuals who took part in the Quit India Movement.

Taking to his social media platform, he expressed deep gratitude to those who, under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership, sparked a wave of patriotism. Consequently, this wave united countless Indians in the quest for freedom.

“We remember with deep gratitude all those brave people who, under the inspiring leadership of Bapu, took part in the Quit India Movement. Their courage lit a spark of patriotism that united countless people in the quest for freedom,” PM Modi posted on X.

The Quit India Movement: A Turning Point

The movement launched on 8 August 1942 at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan. The Quit India Movement was a nationwide call for the British to leave India immediately.

Gandhi’s powerful slogan, ‘Do or Die’, galvanised the masses. It, however, led to one of the most intense periods of civil disobedience in the struggle for independence.

The movement arose from growing frustration after the Cripps Mission failed to secure Indian cooperation during the Second World War. Hence, this failure deepened public resolve to achieve complete self-rule.

Tributes from National Leaders

Union Home Minister Amit Shah described the August Revolution as the pivotal moment in the Indian freedom struggle, which intensified the fight for Independence.

In his tribute on X, he highlighted, “The August Revolution is that pivotal moment in the Indian freedom struggle which intensified the fight for independence. In 1942, Mahatma Gandhi, from the August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai, gave the slogan ‘Do or Die’ and called for ‘Quit India’. This revolution sparked such a mass movement against British rule that the British government was gripped with fear.”

He further added, “On the anniversary of this historic movement, heartfelt salutations to all the immortal freedom fighters of the independence struggle.”

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also paid homage, writing on X, “In the year 1942, on this very day, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi ji,  the people of the country initiated the ‘Quit India Movement’ against the British.  On the remembrance day of this famous Quit India Movement of the freedom struggle, I pay my heartfelt tributes to the immortal martyrs who sacrificed everything for independence. “

State Leaders Join in Remembrance

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the day as a tribute to all the freedom fighters who awakened the nation against the oppressive policies of the British Empire. He further emphasised that their courage inspired generations to fight for independence.

In his post, he wrote, “A humble tribute to all the freedom fighters who awakened the nation against the oppressive policies of the British Empire and ignited the flame of independence through the nationwide awakening of the ‘Quit India Movement’ (August Revolution) on its anniversary!”

“The saga of glory, sacrifice, and martyrdom of the immortal martyrs who offered their lives at the altar of independence will continue to enrich the nation’s consciousness for ages to come. Jai Hind!” CM Yogi further added.

August Kranti Diwas serves as a reminder of the unity, determination, and sacrifice that defined India’s struggle for independence. The Quit India Movement’s spirit continues to inspire generations, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to freedom and justice.

As PM Modi and other leaders reflected on the bravery of 1942’s revolutionaries, the day highlighted their enduring legacy. Their actions, however, remain a guiding light for India’s democratic values and national pride.
