Ashura observed across India and the world
Muslims across India and the globe are observing Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, which marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the revered grandson of Prophet Muhammad.
Imam Hussain and his companions were martyred in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD while standing against tyranny and injustice.
In Kashmir, the Shia community held processions on traditional routes to mark the eighth and tenth days of mourning.
Devotees commemorated the sacrifices of Imam Hussain, who, along with his family, including his six-month-old son Ali Asghar, was denied water and ultimately martyred on the banks of the Euphrates River in Karbala, Iraq.
Imam Hussain: A symbol of truth for all
The martyrdom of Imam Hussain resonates across both Shia and Sunni communities, who mourn the tragedy of Karbala with deep reverence.
Ashura serves as a day of reflection on values such as courage, sacrifice, and resistance to oppression.
While Shia Muslims often express their grief through chest-beating and processions, the broader Muslim community considers Muharram and Ashura deeply sacred, honouring the moral and spiritual lessons Imam Hussain left behind.
