Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid homage to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement at the Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Guwahati, marking a poignant and emotional moment for the state. The visit underscored national recognition of Assam’s long struggle to safeguard its identity, culture and rights.

During the visit, PM Modi offered floral tributes and garlanded the bust of Khargeswar Talukdar, the first martyr of the six-year-long anti-foreigner agitation that began in 1979.

The Prime Minister also toured the martyrs’ gallery, where busts of all 860 martyrs of the Assam Movement have been installed, paying respect to each life lost during the turbulent period.

The Swahid Smarak Kshetra stands as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary citizens during the movement, which left a lasting impact on Assam’s social and political landscape.
The Prime Minister’s presence at the memorial powerfully acknowledged Assam’s past struggles and the price paid by its people.
By honouring the martyrs, PM Modi reaffirmed the importance of preserving Assam’s cultural identity and recognising the historical significance of the movement.
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s visit, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the moment as deeply emotional.
He recalled what he termed the ‘dark days’ of Assam’s history, alleging that unchecked illegal infiltration, violence against indigenous communities and economic decline had pushed the state into prolonged instability under previous regimes.
Contrast Drawn Between Past Instability and Present Progress
Drawing a contrast with the present situation, CM Sarma said Assam is now experiencing a phase of peace, development and renewed confidence.
He stated that people across the state are celebrating growth and progress, while the Prime Minister’s tribute reflects personal sensitivity towards Assam’s history and the sacrifices made by its people.
The Chief Minister further said that PM Modi has devoted unprecedented attention and resources to Assam’s development, crediting the ‘double engine’ government at the Centre and the state for accelerating transformation.
He described the current phase as an ‘Assam renaissance’, marked by stability, prosperity and optimism.
According to CM Sarma, the sacrifices of the Assam Movement martyrs continue to guide the state’s path forward.
PM Modi’s homage, he said, not only honoured the past but also reinforced a collective commitment to building a peaceful and prosperous future for Assam.
