PM Modi Meets Akie Abe; Recalls Shinzo Abe’s Role In India-Japan Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met Akie Abe, wife of late former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, in New Delhi and highlighted her longstanding association with India while remembering Abe’s contribution to India-Japan relations.

In a post on X, PM Modi said he was pleased to meet Akie Abe and deeply valued her enduring association with India. He described Shinzo Abe as a dear friend and visionary leader who played a defining role in taking India-Japan relations to new heights.

PM Modi referred to the inauguration of the Abe Memorial Corridor at the Rudraksh Convention Centre in Varanasi on Wednesday, calling it a fitting tribute to Abe’s lasting contribution to the friendship between India and Japan.

Akie Abe and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attended the inauguration of the memorial corridor. The site commemorates the longstanding cultural, historical and diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Abe played a key role in elevating India-Japan relations to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership and maintained a close association with PM Modi.

On July 8, 2022, an attacker shot Abe while he delivered a campaign speech in Nara, killing him. India observed a one-day national mourning following his death.

PM Modi later attended Abe’s state funeral and remembered him as a global statesman who dedicated his life to serving Japan and contributing to the wider world.

The meeting with Akie Abe and the inauguration of the memorial corridor in Varanasi underline the continuing recognition of Shinzo Abe’s role in strengthening India-Japan ties and the enduring links between the two countries.
