Mithun Chakraborty Appointed West Bengal Government Cultural Advisor With Cabinet Rank

Veteran actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has been appointed cultural advisor to the West Bengal government with the rank of a Cabinet Minister.

The appointment was made in the Information and Cultural Affairs Department with immediate effect, according to a government notification. The role will continue until further orders.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had earlier announced the decision during an event linked to the centenary celebrations of legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar.

The government cited Chakraborty’s contribution to the film industry and his longstanding association with Bengal.

The notification said the Governor approved Chakraborty’s appointment as an advisor to the West Bengal government in the rank of Cabinet Minister. His specific responsibilities will be defined in due course.

Chakraborty is currently in Alipurduar for a film shoot. Reports said he expressed gratitude to Adhikari for entrusting him with the new responsibility.

The veteran actor has enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades across Bengali and Hindi cinema. He has acted in and produced several films and is widely known as ‘Mahaguru’ in Bengali cinema.

Chakraborty joined the BJP in 2021 and has remained an active campaigner for the party in West Bengal. He previously served as a Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member before resigning from Parliament in 2016.

The state government has previously sought his advice on cultural initiatives, including Uttam Kumar’s centenary celebrations and tourism-related matters.

The appointment comes as the Adhikari government focuses on strengthening Bengal’s film and cultural infrastructure, including the proposed Uttam Kumar Film Centre in New Town.
