Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged people across the country to adopt responsible consumption habits and conserve resources. He referred to the economic pressures arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia and global supply chain disruptions.
While addressing a BJP public rally at Parade Grounds in Secunderabad, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of public participation. He said collective efforts were necessary to help India manage rising international fuel prices and economic uncertainty.
PM Modi said the sharp increase in global petrol and diesel prices had made fuel conservation a national responsibility. He encouraged citizens to use Metro rail systems, public transport and car-pooling options whenever possible to reduce fuel consumption and save foreign exchange reserves spent on imports.
The Prime Minister also advised industries and businesses to prefer rail transport for goods movement and encouraged wider use of electric vehicles across the country. He suggested bringing back several digital working practices adopted during the Covid-19 pandemic, including remote working, online meetings and video conferences.
“During the Corona period, we adopted work from home, online meetings, video conferences, and developed many such systems. We had also become accustomed to them. Today, the need of the hour is that we restart those practices, as it would be in the national interest, and we must once again give them priority,” PM Modi stated.
PM Modi urged citizens to avoid unnecessary overseas travel, destination weddings abroad and non-essential imports in order to preserve India’s foreign exchange reserves. He encouraged people to choose domestic tourism and celebrate occasions within the country.
The Prime Minister also appealed to families to postpone non-essential gold purchases for a year. He urged people to prioritise Indian-made products, including daily-use goods.
PM Modi further advised households to reduce edible oil consumption, saying it would benefit both public health and the economy.
Farmers were encouraged to reduce chemical fertiliser use by half and adopt natural farming methods. They were also advised to switch from diesel-powered systems to solar-powered irrigation pumps.
Referring to the global economic situation, PM Modi noted that conflicts and supply chain disruptions had significantly affected prices worldwide.
“We don’t have big oil wells. We have to import petrol, diesel and gas. The prices of petrol, diesel, gas and fertilisers have skyrocketed. For the last two months, the government has been making continuous efforts to save people from the impact by shouldering the burden,” PM Modi mentioned.
The Prime Minister concluded by calling for unity and collective responsibility in overcoming the challenges facing the country.
