The Opposition has returned to parliament with renewed vigor, determined to make their voices heard. They chose to make their stand today as Prime Minister Narendra Modi rose to respond to the Motion of Thanks for the President’s address. The immediate catalyst for their protest was the PM’s speech, which coincided with a representative from the violence-hit state of Manipur seeking to speak.

As some MPs began protesting Speaker Om Birla’s refusal to allow the Manipur representative to speak, the rest of the Opposition quickly joined in. The Lok Sabha chamber soon echoed with boos and slogans.
When the Prime Minister started his speech, the opposition MPs intensified their protests with louder slogans and table thumping. Chants of “Manipur, Manipur,” “Tanashahi nahin chalegi (We won’t allow dictatorship),” and “Justice for Manipur” filled the chamber, drawing sharp reprimands from the Speaker directed at the Leader of the Opposition.

“I can understand the pain of some people. Even after spreading lies, they tasted defeat,” Prime Minister Modi remarked amid several interruptions.
“The people of India have given us the opportunity to work for the third time. People have given us a mandate. They saw our track record of 10 years. Twenty-five crore people came out of poverty. This has never happened since independence,” PM Modi asserted.
