The Delhi High Court has taken up a plea filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with an alleged liquor policy scam.
The bench, headed by Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, has directed the CBI to respond to the plea by 17 July 2024.
Arvind Kejriwal, presently in judicial custody until 12 July 2024, raised objections to the legality of his arrest and subsequent detention by the CBI.
On 26 June 2024, authorities arrested him after he appeared before the Rouse Avenue Court, which remanded him to three-day CBI custody for further questioning.
Last week, the CBI conducted inquiries at Tihar Jail and then obtained permission to present Chief Minister Kejriwal before a special court.
The Delhi High Court stayed a lower court’s decision recently granting bail to Kejriwal in a separate money laundering case, citing inadequacies in document evaluation and arguments presented.
Earlier in May, the Supreme Court had reserved its judgment on another petition filed by Kejriwal challenging his arrest and subsequent remand by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the excise policy case.
The apex court had earlier granted him interim bail for 21 days in light of the upcoming general elections.
The developments in the court are crucial as Arvind Kejriwal faces heightened legal challenges involving multiple agencies and cases.
