Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday highlighted the transformative impact of the Understanding of Lifelong Learning for All in Society (ULLAS) programme for adult learners across India.
The PM shared an article that praised the initiative for creating meaningful educational opportunities, particularly in rural communities and for women, an official confirmed.
Launched in 2022 as a key initiative under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the ULLAS programme has steadily expanded access to education for adults, providing them with tools to improve literacy, numeracy, and lifelong learning skills.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhury explained in the article that the programme has been pivotal in enhancing learning outcomes for rural and female learners.
The article highlights that the ULLAS programme has significantly contributed to rising literacy levels in rural areas, with women benefiting prominently.
These gains are seen as crucial for India’s progress towards achieving the literacy targets of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
PM Modi’s endorsement of the programme underscores the government’s emphasis on education as a foundational element of social and economic development.
Last month, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan declared Himachal Pradesh as the fifth fully literate State/Union Territory in India, following Tripura, Mizoram, Goa, and Ladakh.
Pradhan emphasised that this milestone reflects the power of collaboration among the government, society, and volunteers in advancing literacy.
The announcement coincided with International Literacy Day celebrations, where Pradhan reiterated PM Modi’s vision of education as the bedrock of a civilised, self-reliant, and developed India.
The theme for this year’s International Literacy Day, ‘Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era’, highlighted the transformative role of digital technology in expanding access to reading, writing, numeracy, and lifelong learning skills.
The ULLAS programme has leveraged digital tools to reach learners across remote rural regions, strengthening India’s education ecosystem and fostering inclusivity.
Himachal Pradesh’s achievement as a fully literate State joins Tripura, Mizoram, and Goa, while Ladakh became the first fully literate Union Territory on June 24, 2024.
PM Modi’s recognition of ULLAS and the progress in these regions signal the government’s commitment to building a literate and empowered nation, ensuring equitable access to education and supporting India’s broader development goals.
