Navi Mumbai International Airport: Pioneering India’s Next-Generation Greenfield Airport

Navi Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (NMIAL) is a special purpose vehicle tasked with designing, constructing, operating, and expanding the greenfield Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) in Maharashtra.

Mumbai International Airport Ltd (a subsidiary of Adani Airports Holdings Ltd), holding 74 per cent, and CIDCO, holding 26 per cent, are partnering through NMIAL to build a sustainable airport that meets the growing air traffic demands in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Western India while boosting India’s global connectivity.

Situated in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, approximately 37 kilometres from South Mumbai, NMIA will feature two parallel ‘Code F’ runways, each 3,700 metres long and 60 metres wide.

The airport’s final phase will comprise four terminals, with the initial phase offering a single integrated terminal for domestic and international operations, handling 20 million passengers per annum (MPPA). The airport will handle up to 90 million passengers per annum (MPPA) and process 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo each year.

The airport’s design draws inspiration from the lotus, India’s national flower, with 12 sculptural anchor columns rising like unfurling petals and 17 mega columns supporting the roof canopies.

Terminal 1 includes 66 check-in counters, 22 self-baggage drop points, 29 aerobridges, and 10 bus boarding gates, complemented by fully automated cargo facilities for pharmaceuticals, perishables, express cargo, and dangerous goods.

Connectivity and Technology

NMIA is strategically located near key industrial hubs, including JNPT, MIDC Taloja, Mumbai Port Trust, Thane, and Bhiwandi.

The airport will host 245 passenger aircraft stands, seven cargo stands, and 79 general aviation stands, with 16 GA hangars.

State-of-the-art technology, such as 5G connectivity, automated baggage handling, IoT-enabled monitoring, Digi Yatra seamless processing, and real-time tracking, ensures operational efficiency and enhanced passenger experience.

Terminal 1 features 110 retail and F&B outlets, including Indian street food concepts, artisanal tea, breweries, and international cuisines, along with immersive digital experiences celebrating India’s culture.

Dedicated zones include kids’ play areas, transit hotels, CIP lounges for 500 passengers, and Pranaam meet-and-greet services.

Committed to green practices, NMIA will generate 47MW solar power, implement rainwater harvesting, wastewater reuse, low-flow fixtures, electric vehicles for airside transport, and automated people movers. Passive cooling through lotus-inspired netted structures ensures energy efficiency.

Navi Mumbai International Airport will redefine air travel in India by offering world-class infrastructure, operating sustainably, and providing seamless connectivity. As it rises, NMIA will strengthen India’s position as a global aviation hub while supporting economic growth in the region.
