Sebastien Lecornu Steps Down Weeks After Appointment As French PM

Lecornu’s newly announced cabinet faced immediate criticism from both his allies and the opposition.

The conservative Republicans party expressed strong objections over the return of France’s former Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire as Defence Minister.

The announcement also appointed Roland Lescure as Economy Minister, while key figures such as Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin, and Culture Minister Rachida Dati retained their positions.

The cabinet comprised 18 members, including 16 ministers and two minister delegates.

The cabinet line-up drew criticism from National Rally leader Jordan Bardella, who described it on social media as merely representing the ‘continuity’ of the previous government.

Mathilde Panot, president of the La France Insoumise parliamentary group, condemned Lecornu’s nomination as a ‘provocation’, claiming Macron pursued policies favouring the wealthy minority, despite rising public protests.

Background and Appointment

On 9 September, President Emmanuel Macron appointed Sebastien Lecornu, then Defence Minister, as France’s Prime Minister.

At 39, Lecornu had served over three years as Defence Minister and is considered a close ally of Macron. His swift appointment followed the ousting of outgoing Prime Minister Francois Bayrou and his cabinet in a parliamentary confidence vote triggered by proposals to reduce public spending.

Bayrou subsequently tendered his resignation.

In a message shared on social media, Lecornu thanked President Macron for his trust and praised outgoing PM Bayrou for his ‘courage’ in defending his convictions.

Despite the brief tenure, Lecornu aimed to stabilise both the political and economic situation in France quickly, reflecting Macron’s sense of urgency.

Lecornu’s resignation underscores the ongoing volatility in French politics, with cabinet appointments and reforms remaining under intense scrutiny.

The political upheaval comes amid widespread protests and challenges in balancing economic policies with public expectations.

Macron now faces the task of appointing a new Prime Minister capable of steering the country through these turbulent times.
