During his Independence Day speech, PM Modi observed a major shift in societal attitudes towards sports. He noted that previously, many parents hesitated to encourage children to pursue sports seriously, but today, families proudly support young athletes.
“Sports play an important role in development. Now, when children take an interest and excel in sports, parents feel proud. I see this as a positive sign for the nation’s future,” he said.
On July 1, the Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Modi, approved the National Sports Policy (NSP) 2025, marking a landmark initiative to reshape India’s sporting landscape.
The policy seeks to create a comprehensive ecosystem for athletes, from grassroots to elite levels, ensuring access to quality coaching, fitness programmes, playgrounds, infrastructure, and necessary resources.
PM Modi stressed that the NSP will support small-scale industries producing sports equipment, ensuring that resources reach even the remotest areas.
“Through these efforts, we want to ensure that the entire ecosystem promotes sports in far-flung areas,” he added.
Legislative Support
The Prime Minister also highlighted the passage of the National Sports Governance Bill 2025 and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill 2025 on August 12.
These legislative measures are designed to strengthen governance in sports, promote fair play, and ensure athlete safety.
A cornerstone of the reforms is the Safe Sport Policy, which mandates athlete protection frameworks, grievance redressal mechanisms, and safeguards against harassment, particularly for women, divyang, and minor athletes.
PM Modi noted that such measures are crucial for creating an inclusive, safe, and thriving sporting environment in India.
With the NSP 2025 and accompanying legislation, the government aims to build a strong sporting culture, enhance India’s global competitiveness, and provide opportunities for young athletes in even the most remote regions.
These initiatives will nurture talent, improve infrastructure, and provide safety and support for all athletes.
PM Modi’s address reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting sports as a tool for national development, fostering self-confidence among youth, and enabling India to emerge as a global sporting powerhouse.
