On the occasion of National Maritime Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the critical importance of strengthening India’s maritime sector and ports.
Through a post on the social media platform X, PM Modi celebrated India’s rich maritime history and underscored the vital role the sector plays in the nation’s development.
PM Modi reflected on the historic significance of the maritime sector in India’s journey toward nation-building.
He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to enhancing this sector, along with the country’s ports, to contribute to India’s economic progress.
“Today, on National Maritime Day, we recall India’s rich maritime history and the role played by this sector in nation-building. We will continue to strengthen the maritime sector and our ports for India’s progress,” PM Modi stated.
In a video message accompanying the post, PM Modi highlighted the government’s key achievements over the past decade, notably the doubling of India’s port capacity and the development of more than 1,000 km of new roads for better port connectivity.

“We have worked consistently to strengthen India’s maritime ecosystem. In the last decade, we have doubled the port capacity of India and developed 1,000 km of new roads to improve port connectivity,” the Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister also mentioned transformative initiatives like ‘Ports for Prosperity’ and ‘Ports for Progress’.
These efforts have played a pivotal role in reshaping the maritime landscape in the region.
Additionally, PM Modi highlighted the modernization of India’s coastal shipping infrastructure, emphasizing that strong maritime capabilities have historically benefitted both India and the world.
“Ports for Prosperity and Ports for Progress have been changing the maritime landscape of the region. India is also modernizing its coastal shipping mode. History has further witnessed that whenever India has had a strong maritime capability, the country as well as the world has benefitted,” Prime Minister Modi added.
National Maritime Day is observed on April 5 each year to commemorate the first voyage from India to London by the SS Loyalty, a ship owned by the Scindia Steam Navigation Company Limited, in 1919.
This historic event further marked India’s entry into global maritime trade.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways celebrates this day annually to recognize the critical role of maritime trade in the development of the Indian economy and its strategic position in global trade.
PM Modi’s message underscores the government’s continued commitment to bolstering India’s maritime sector, enhancing infrastructure, and fostering growth.
With initiatives aimed at improving ports and coastal shipping, India is poised to remain a key player in global maritime trade.
