Nirmala Sitharaman’s Journey and Contributions
Born on 18 August 1959 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Sitharaman belongs to a Tamil Iyengar family. She has been serving in the Rajya Sabha since 2016, representing Karnataka. Earlier, she represented Andhra Pradesh from 2014 to 2016.
Nirmala Sitharaman has held several prominent positions in the Union Cabinet. She was India’s 28th Defence Minister from 2017 to 2019, becoming the second woman after Indira Gandhi to hold the role.
She later took charge as the country’s Finance Minister, making history as the first woman to serve as a full-time occupant of both the Finance and Defence portfolios.
Sitharaman has presented the Union Budget eight times, standing second only to former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, who holds the record for the most budgets presented.
Her budgets have consistently focused on economic reforms, financial inclusion, and digital transformation.
As she celebrates her 66th birthday, leaders across the political spectrum continue to acknowledge her contributions to governance, policy-making, and India’s growth trajectory.
