Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the nation on Tuesday on the occasion of Poila Boishakh, marking the start of the Bengali New Year 1432.
In a message shared on social media, PM Modi wished everyone prosperity and good health in the year ahead.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Best wishes on Poila Boishakh! I hope all your wishes are fulfilled this year. I pray for everyone’s success, happiness, prosperity and good health. Shubho Nabo Barsho!”
Poila Boishakh marks the first day of the Bengali calendar and is widely celebrated by Bengali communities both in India and abroad.
The term comes from ‘Poila’ meaning first, and ‘Boishakh’ — the opening month of the Bengali lunisolar calendar.
With today’s celebration, the year 1432 officially begins.
Bengali traditions consider the first day highly auspicious.
The festival holds deep cultural importance for Bengalis across the globe. However, it is especially significant in Bangladesh and Indian states like West Bengal, Tripura, and parts of Assam.
In celebration of the ‘Noboborsho’ or New Year, people clean their homes, decorate entrances with traditional ‘alpana’ art, and offer prayers to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha.
Wearing new clothes, visiting temples, and enjoying elaborate home-cooked meals are common traditions.
In cities like Kolkata, restaurants join in the festivities by offering classic Bengali dishes.
Business owners also observe rituals by conducting ‘Lakshmi-Narayan’ and ‘Ganesh pooja’, seeking blessings for a successful year.
People open new account books in the name of God, and priests mark them with vermilion swastikas as a symbol of prosperity.
