Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his heartfelt wishes to the Indian contingent participating in the Commonwealth Games 2026 and expressed confidence that they would represent the country with commitment, resilience and sporting excellence.

In a post on X, PM Modi said India’s athletes consistently motivate millions through their hard work and achievements. He expressed hope that they would once again make the nation proud with spirited performances on the global stage.

King Charles III formally inaugurated the Commonwealth Games 2026 during a grand opening ceremony at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro, bringing the event back to the Scottish city after its successful hosting in 2014.

Olympic medallists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain led the Indian delegation during the Parade of Nations. Mirabai carried the national flag, while Lovlina held the ceremonial Commonwealth baton.

India has fielded a 126-member squad that will compete across 13 disciplines, including para sports.

India’s medal challenge will be spearheaded by Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra in athletics, while Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain will lead the country’s hopes in weightlifting and boxing.

The Indian lawn bowls team became the first to begin competition before the official opening ceremony.

Competitors from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories will battle for honours over 11 days across 10 sports.

With the Games officially underway, India will aim to continue its impressive Commonwealth Games legacy with another strong medal-winning performance.
