Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed profound sorrow over the building collapse in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, and announced financial assistance for those affected.

In a message shared by the Prime Minister’s Office on social media platform X, he conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and described the incident as deeply distressing.

PM Modi declared an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased. Injured individuals will receive Rs 50,000 as immediate relief.

The tragedy unfolded in the Phaphamau area when a private cold storage facility in Chandapur village, located along the Prayagraj-Lucknow highway, collapsed following a loud explosion.

The roof reportedly caved in, resulting in four confirmed deaths and leaving several others injured, some critically.

Emergency teams, including police, administrative officials, and disaster response units, swiftly reached the site.

Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force initiated coordinated rescue operations and have so far rescued 16 individuals from the debris.

Injured victims were transported to Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed that the facility belongs to a local businessman, Ansar Ahmad.

Preliminary findings indicate possible structural negligence, though a comprehensive inquiry is underway under the supervision of the District Magistrate.

Police are examining all aspects of the incident.

The collapse disrupted traffic on the highway, causing congestion in nearby areas.

Authorities deployed additional personnel, diverted traffic, and used heavy machinery to clear debris.

Officials affirmed that rescue operations continue, with strict action promised against those found responsible.
