Prime Minister Narendra Modi refuted allegations of an uneven playing field in the Lok Sabha elections, asserting that relevant laws were established prior to his tenure. He dismissed the accusations by the Opposition as mere excuses for their anticipated defeat.
Addressing concerns regarding the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) activities, PM Modi emphasized that only a small fraction of cases—3%—involve political figures, with the agency seizing significantly more cash over the past decade compared to prior periods.
In an interview with ANI, PM Modi clarified, “None of the laws governing these institutions were enacted during my government’s tenure, including those concerning the ED, CBI, or Election Commission.” He highlighted legislative reforms, including a bill ensuring the representation of the Leader of the Opposition in the committee for selecting Election Commissioners.
PM Modi underscored efforts to enhance transparency within the Election Commission, emphasizing broader representation and merit-based appointments. He criticized past practices where individuals close to certain political factions secured positions within the Commission.
Responding to criticisms from the opposition, PM Modi quipped, “We refuse to stoop to their level. We are committed to integrity and refuse to engage in unethical practices.”
Furthermore, PM Modi rebuked attempts by the opposition to preemptively attribute their potential electoral loss to external factors, such as claims over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). He emphasized the need for accountability and urged against preemptive justifications for electoral outcomes.
Referring to recent legislative changes, PM Modi highlighted the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023, which introduced a revised selection process for Election Commissioners.
Regarding allegations of political vendetta and selective targeting, PM Modi defended ED’s actions, citing significant asset seizures and increased recoveries under his administration. He reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to combating corruption, asserting, “Corruption has plagued our nation, and we must confront it with utmost determination.”
As India prepares for the 2024 general elections, PM Modi reiterated his government’s dedication to ensuring free and fair electoral processes, underscoring the importance of accountability and integrity in upholding democratic principles.
