PM Modi Conveys Firm Global Stance To Canadian Counterpart; Seals Energy & Uranium Accords

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held wide-ranging talks in New Delhi, addressing global security concerns and advancing bilateral economic cooperation.

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that both leaders reviewed escalating tensions in Iran and the Gulf region.

Foreign Secretary (East) P Kumaran stated that PM Modi conveyed India’s deep concern over recent developments in West Asia.

He urged all parties to exercise restraint. P Kumaran called for dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further escalation.

He emphasised the protection of civilian lives. P Kumaran reaffirmed respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.

Indian missions in the region remain in contact with nationals and community bodies. They have issued advisories urging vigilance and adherence to local security guidance.

During a joint press conference, PM Modi reiterated India’s consistent position on global conflicts.

He affirmed that India advocates peace and stability. He stated that cooperation between two democracies strengthens the voice for peace.

The discussions occurred amid intensifying hostilities following joint United States-Israel strikes on Iran targeting its missile and defence infrastructure.

Reports indicated senior Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, died in the initial assault.

Tehran retaliated with drone and missile attacks against US assets and regional allies.

Strategic Energy Partnership

Alongside security discussions, both leaders strengthened economic ties. They set a year-end deadline to conclude negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

They welcomed a CAD 2.6 billion agreement between Cameco and India’s Department of Atomic Energy for long-term uranium supply.

The deal supports India’s civil nuclear generation and clean energy transition.

The leaders advanced the India-Canada Strategic Energy Partnership. They expanded cooperation across clean energy, conventional fuels, nuclear power, and critical minerals.

They endorsed increased trade in LNG, LPG, crude oil, refined petroleum products, potash, and uranium.

Bilateral trade currently stands at $9 billion. Both sides aim to raise it to $50 billion by 2030.

Canada reaffirmed plans to expand heavy oil exports and boost LNG production to 50 million tonnes annually by 2030 and 100 million tonnes by 2040.

The leaders encouraged investment flows, long-term supply contracts, and institutional financing support.

They signed memoranda on critical minerals and clean energy cooperation.

The leaders agreed to collaborate on mineral stockpiling, emissions reduction technologies, and energy transition pathways.

They also pledged cooperation in space research, AI-enabled aerospace systems, telemedicine diagnostics, agriculture, and resilient food supply chains.
