Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Sharmila Dhankar and several other Indian athletes for their medal-winning performances at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow.
In a post on X, PM Modi described Sharmila’s achievement as a historic moment for Indian sport after she became India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games para-athletics gold medallist. He praised her outstanding performance and wished the para-athlete continued success in future competitions.

Sharmila won the gold medal in the women’s F57 shot put event with a season-best throw of 9.81 metres, ending India’s two-decade wait for a para-athletics gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
India also celebrated another milestone in the event as Shilpa Shyla secured the bronze medal following a successful post-event protest and review that disqualified Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi’s valid mark.
Shilpa’s personal-best throw of 7.26 metres gave India its first-ever double podium finish in a para-athletics event at the Commonwealth Games.
PM Modi also congratulated high jumper Sarvesh Kushare after he won silver in the men’s high jump.
In his post, the Prime Minister praised Kushare’s determination and consistency and wished him continued success.

The Prime Minister further lauded India’s weightlifters for their strong performances.
Gyaneshwari Yadav won silver, Bindyarani Devi claimed bronze, and Valluri Ajaya Babu secured silver after setting a Commonwealth Games snatch record in the men’s 79kg category.
PM Modi also congratulated Ajaya Babu on his record-breaking performance and wished him success in future competitions.
