Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated West Bengal leader Suvendu Adhikari on the decision to commemorate June 20 as Bengal Foundation Day, calling the date a landmark moment in the state’s history.
In a letter to CM Adhikari, PM Modi said that recognising the day would help connect younger generations with West Bengal’s rich historical legacy.
PM Modi highlighted the importance of June 20 in the history of West Bengal. He said the date marks a democratic decision that protected the state’s unique linguistic, cultural and civilisational identity within India.
According to him, the occasion reminds people of a crucial period when visionary leaders ensured that millions maintained their bond with the nation.
The Prime Minister also paid tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee for his leadership during a time of political uncertainty and upheaval.
PM Modi credited Mookerjee with giving voice to those who wanted to remain part of India and influencing the June 20, 1947, decision that led to the creation of West Bengal within India. He also praised the state government’s welfare initiatives and welcomed the Ayushman Bharat scheme, saying it would improve access to affordable healthcare for millions.
PM Modi appreciated efforts to accelerate land allocation for border fencing and security projects.
In addition, the Prime Minister praised initiatives such as free bus travel for women, the implementation of the Annapurna Yojana and the expansion of the Maa Ahar scheme. He further welcomed the move to extend 7th Pay Commission benefits to government employees.
Reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to West Bengal’s development, PM Modi said the Union Government had released nearly ₹40,000 crore for stalled projects, allocated around ₹15,000 crore for railway development and planned projects worth approximately ₹60,000 crore for future growth.
