Mahanavami marks the worship of Goddess Siddhidatri, revered as the bestower of supernatural powers. The word ‘Siddhi’ denotes spiritual or supernatural ability, while ‘Dhatri’ signifies the giver.
According to scriptures, she fulfils divine aspirations and is one of the nine forms of Navadurga. Lord Shiva is also called Ardhanarishwara because one side of his body represents Siddhidatri. Vedic texts state that Shiva attained all siddhis by worshipping her.
