PM Modi chairs meeting to review tourism sector

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting in Delhi on Tuesday to review the progress of India’s tourism sector.

The meeting came just days after the 22 April terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people dead.

Following the tragedy, many tourists cancelled their trips to the Union Territory.

Tourism Sector In J&K Suffers After Military Tensions

The tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir has taken a massive hit after Operation Sindoor.

The Indian Army launched the operation targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam attack.

In retaliation, Pakistan attempted to strike Indian military bases on 8, 9, and 10 May. Indian forces launched fierce counterattacks on multiple Pakistani installations.

Tourist footfall has dropped sharply, affecting the regional economy.

The Chamber of Tourism, Trade and Industry Katra (CTTIK) said the slump has impacted many sectors linked to tourism.

CTTIK urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to announce a relief package to support the struggling industry, PTI reported.

During an extraordinary meeting, CTTIK passed a resolution condemning the Pahalgam attack. The resolution praised the bravery of Indian forces during Operation Sindoor.

President Raj Kumar Padha moved the resolution, calling tourism the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy. He stressed that the sector is crucial for employment, trade, and economic growth.

The resolution also warned that tourism is the most vulnerable industry during unrest. It suffers first and recovers last in times of crisis.

CTTIK called for urgent intervention to protect livelihoods tied to the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
