PM Modi Celebrates 10 Years Of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) on Wednesday, praising the scheme’s impact on enhancing financial stability across India.

In a statement posted on X, PM Modi expressed his congratulations, stating, “Today, we mark a momentous occasion— #10YearsOfJanDhan. Congratulations to all the beneficiaries and compliments to all those who worked to make this scheme a success. Jan Dhan Yojana has been paramount in boosting financial inclusion and giving dignity to crores of people, especially women, youth, and the marginalized communities.”

The Prime Minister emphasized the scheme’s role in advancing financial inclusion and restoring dignity to millions, particularly women, youth, and marginalized communities.

Since its inception, PMJDY has banked 53.13 crore individuals, amassing a total balance of Rs 2,31,235.97 crore across these accounts.

The scheme also employs 11.59 lakh Bank Mitras who provide essential branchless banking services nationwide.

In a celebratory post, the Government of India noted, “Today, India celebrates #10YearsOfJanDhan! Under PM @narendramodi’s visionary leadership, this game-changing initiative has redefined the financial landscape of #NewIndia, bringing millions into the fold of financial inclusion.”

PMJDY, a National Mission on Financial Inclusion, aims to ensure that every household in India has access to banking services, financial literacy, and facilities like credit, insurance, and pensions.

A notable feature of the scheme is the provision of zero-balance bank accounts, a significant shift from previous norms.

Beneficiaries also receive a RuPay Debit card with an inbuilt accident insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh.

The initiative further supports the Direct Benefits Transfer (DBT) scheme, facilitating the transfer of government benefits directly into beneficiaries’ accounts.

Addressing technological hurdles such as connectivity and online transactions, the scheme plans to leverage mobile transactions through telecom operators and their networks as additional cash-out points.

Efforts are also underway to engage the youth in this Mission Mode Programme, aiming to expand its reach and efficacy.
