Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described terrorism, extremism and radicalisation as ‘grave challenges’ confronting not only India and Canada but all of humanity.
He made the remarks during a joint press interaction with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney following bilateral talks in New Delhi.
“We agree that terrorism, extremism and radicalisation are grave challenges faced not only by our two countries but by all of humanity. Close cooperation between us in combating these threats is essential for global peace and stability,” the Prime Minister said.
Carney’s visit marks the first official trip to India by a Canadian Prime Minister since ties became strained under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Ties worsened after allegations by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar triggered a diplomatic rift.
After a leadership change in Ottawa, both nations moved to reset relations and address the Khalistan issue.
NSA Ajit Doval held talks in Canada, with both sides agreeing to treat Khalistan-linked activities as terrorism and organised crime.
Despite attempts by a fringe extremist group to disrupt ties, both governments reaffirmed their commitment to constructive dialogue.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said ties have gained fresh momentum since his first meeting with Mark Carney, with growing trust and positivity.
The leaders pledged a next-level partnership, set a 50 billion US dollar trade target by 2030, and agreed to expedite the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, signalling renewed resolve to deepen cooperation.
