PM Modi, Canadian PM Carney Hold Talks; India To Attend G7 Summit In June

PM Narendra Modi spoke with Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday, congratulating him on his election victory and accepting his invitation to attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.

PM Modi expressed optimism about deepening cooperation between the two vibrant democracies, highlighting shared interests and strong people-to-people ties.

Canada To Host G7 Leaders’ Summit In June

Canada, as this year’s G7 President, will host the summit from June 15 to 17.

The G7 group includes seven of the world’s largest economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with the European Union.

PM Modi’s Continued Engagement With G7

This will mark India’s 12th participation in the G7 Summits and PM Modi’s sixth consecutive attendance.

Prime Minister Modi previously attended the 50th G7 Summit hosted by Italy in 2023, where India participated as an Outreach Country, engaging on key issues relevant to India and the Global South.

PM Carney has prioritised rebuilding and strengthening economic and strategic ties with India.

During his election campaign, Carney described the Canada-India relationship as ‘incredibly important’, emphasising deep personal, economic, and strategic connections between the countries.

India Looks To Overcome Past Diplomatic Strains

The Modi-Carney talks signal a desire to improve ties after 2023 tensions, when Trudeau accused India of involvement in Khalistani terrorist Nijjar’s killing—a claim India denied as politically motivated.

The dispute led to diplomatic expulsions, halted trade talks, and suspended official visits.

Last week, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a productive conversation with Canada’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Anita Anand, focusing on enhancing cooperation and advancing shared priorities.

With new leadership in Canada, India aims to move past previous tensions and foster stronger bilateral ties based on mutual respect, cooperation, and shared goals ahead of the G7 Summit.
